Fall 2024 Happenings

After a bit of a teaching hiatus, I’m returning to the classroom and lecture hall this October, and I’m so excited to connect with people over quilts in person. If you’re in the New York/New Jersey area, there are two fabulous shows coming up, and I’m teaching a no-sew class affiliated with one, and lecturing at the other.

First up is the Hunterdon Art Museum, where two of my quilts, Most Noble Sorceress and Holding Things Together (Show the Work) are part of the show Unblocked: Improvisation and Identity in Contemporary Quilts. It’s a fantastic space, a beautiful show, and I’m ecstatic to be one of the artists included because many of the others have been teachers and inspirations to me.

On October 13 I’m teaching Improv (Un)Planning: A Guided Approach to the Improv Quilting Mindset. So many people tell me that they are inspired by improv but intimidated by the scope and possibilities, and this class is meant to get our brains used to the balance of freedom and restraint in the process. It’s a no-sew class, so we’re going to move through exercises by making marks on paper, which means that artists of all kinds are welcome, though we’ll also talk about translating the marks to fabric. Read more and register here. [UPDATE: Class has been cancelled and will hopefully come back in a different format.]

The very next weekend on October 19 I have the extreme honor of being a featured speaker at the Warwick Valley Quilter’s Guild Stars of the Valley Show alongside Jen Strauser. I’ll be giving my lecture “Planned and Unplanned,” which gives my thesis of improv in quilting along with examples and tips specifically for quilters. This show, held in a school in Warwick NY, is always a delight and I have loved working with the guild in the past. WVQG is big, experienced, and very talented. It’s a short one-hour drive from me in Northern Jersey, and there is lots of NJMQG crossover.

I hope to see you there.
